National Park Service – Mojave National Preserve – Hazardous Materials Cleanup

Contaminated Soils
and Containers |
TLG was selected by the National Park Service (NPS), Mojave National Preserve to conduct waste classification and removal activities at a site near the Cima Road entrance to the Preserve. Prior to designation of this area as a scenic preserve, a variety of waste materials and debris were abandoned on Federal lands administered by the US Bureau of Land Management. These items included drums containing waste oil and water; 5-gallon containers of solvent, roofing tar, and red-lead paint; and miscellaneous debris. In addition to the abandoned materials, an individual parked a travel trailer and erected a storage shed built from military ammunition boxes and an outhouse. Two areas in the vicinity were also the site of wire burning activities.
TLG evaluated the drummed contents for chlorinated solvent content, sampled various oil stained soil, and collected samples from the wire and trailer burn sites. In particular, samples from the burn areas were analyzed for dioxins and furans. Drums and containers were properly characterized, re-packaged and shipped off-site for disposal. TLG also excavated all contaminated soils from the site and conducted confirmatory sampling to ensure that no contamination remained.
